My house was a little too quite yesterday after my 10 year old son, Thomas, left for sleep away camp. While this is not his first time away from home, it is the first time at an overnight camp and the first time to be gone for 5 full days and nights. Normally something like this would cause me pause and great concern but what I have learned is that when your kids are ready for certain experiences, especially ones that helps them embrace their independence and build self confidence, somehow as a parent you are too. My mind was quickly able to shift from the anxiety of having him be gone to the what a great experience it will be for him and my own reservations and concern would hold him back.
I hugged Thomas goodbye and said “I will miss you” and he replied “I will miss you more” A response like that is what makes motherhood all worth it!
